New patient transport stretcher from a Polish manufacturer

In the second quarter of this year, the latest patient transport stretcher from Famed Żywiec was launched on the market. The stretcher is designed for fast and safe movement through hospital corridors. The STRIDER is the quintessence of ergonomics and mobility in a modern two-column design, which will ensure smooth patient transition between wards. Let’s find out what this patient transport stretcher has in store.

Safe and comfortable patient transport stretcher

The safety of patients and medical staff is very important. As early as at the equipment design stage, care must be taken to ensure that the equipment complies with standards, is ergonomic and safe for users. The solutions implemented in Famed STRIDER are the result of the designers‘ experience and users’ opinions, which were a source of knowledge and inspiration for the manufacturer. According to research, in the US alone, up to 1 million incidents of patients falling in hospitals occur each year. These cause around 250,000 injuries and up to 11,000 deaths [1]. Approximately 30-35% of falls occurring in healthcare settings result in injuries that can cost more than $14,000 per incident to treat, extending a patient’s hospital stay by an average of 6.3 days [2].

Solutions to protect the patient

The stretcher’s 1480 mm long side rails protect the patient from falls. The structure, made of high-quality materials, is able to withstand a vertical pressure of 100 kg. This is very important when pushing the stretcher from the side, especially if there is a heavier patient on it. The side rails used can be dropped below the level of the mattress platform, allowing patients to climb up and down safely. Large 200mm diameter wheels make the stretcher easy to steer and provide stability even when driving on uneven surfaces. The patient transport stretcher is also equipped with a QuickBrake™. It allows the stretcher to stop immediately in an emergency situation to begin resuscitation of the patient. Safe patient transfer from stretcher to hospital bed or operating table is ensured by the virtually zero transfer space. The design of the side rails made it possible to reduce the gap between the stretcher and other equipment, which, combined with the transfer mattress, minimises the risk of falls.

More than just a patient transport stretcher

This patient transport stretcher is not only ideal for transporting patients from point A to point B, but can also be used as a simple treatment trolley. The two-column design ensures adequate stability, and a number of adjustments allow the stretcher’s position to be adapted to the doctor’s requirements. The curved base and the clearance between the base and the floor, makes plenty of legroom available. The folding side rails and push handles do not restrict the movements of the medical staff.

Perfect partner for medical imaging

This state-of-the-art patient transport stretcher not only transports the patient to the X-ray room and facilitates transfer to the imaging table, but also allows X-rays to be taken on the stretcher itself. The two-column design and low base provide adequate space for the use of a mobile X-ray C-arm or bedside X-ray unit. Available at a length of 1050 mm, the 360 mm high clearance makes it possible to safely insert the C-arm under the mattress platform and perform imaging. The curved, tapered base allows the X-ray unit to be positioned close to the mattress platform, providing better access to the imaging window. The X-ray-transparent HPL mattress filling ensures high-quality images. Another solution to facilitate imaging is the X-ray cassette tray. The unique guidance system allows the cassette to be positioned correctly in relation to the area to be X-rayed.

Tailor-made solutions

The Famed STRIDER patient transport stretcher is designed so that its functionality can be decided by the users. The manufacturer provides a choice of solutions that can affect the comfort of work and the application range of the stretcher – the customer can choose the version of the product that best suits their needs. A stretcher with a four-section mattress platform will allow more advanced positioning of the patient using the mobile thigh or lower leg section than a two-section mattress platform.

Details matter

Selecting the type of push handles on the patient’s legs and head side will also allow the stretcher to be tailored to personal preference. Fitting folding IV hangers on the patient’s head side will allow them to be used as shuffle handles, minimising the amount of equipment. The standard polyurethane foam mattress in a water-resistant, anti-static cover can be replaced with a mattress protected by an artificial leather cover in another colour. An additional dedicated transfer mattress will facilitate the transfer of the patient from the stretcher to the hospital bed or operating table. An optional fifth wheel will make tight corridors and corners easier to navigate, and additional accessories will make it possible to install IVs, fluid bags, monitors, oxygen cylinders or secure patient belongings and keep things tidy.
