Exported medical equipment is conquering China

The result of China’s economic development is a gradual increase in the number of people using medical services. Since the mid-1990s, the population has increased by some 400 million[3]. Demographic problems — such as the ageing of the population, result in an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases. It is estimated that there will be around 223 million people over 65 years of age in China in 2030. The unhygienic lifestyle, lack of physical activity and junk food contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and cancer. For example, in this country alone, the number of people suffering from diabetes has already exceeded 90 million[4].

Polish accents in Chinese hospitals

These and many other factors force an increase in demand for medical services, which are only partially satisfied at the internal level. The mass-care-oriented primary care system includes facilities with a high demand for low-quality medical equipment. At the same time, however, there are high-class clinical hospitals that supply only the highest quality products. By the end of 2020, in China, there were approximately 24,000 private hospitals[5]. It is in these facilities, and not only, Polish medical devices, which are treated as premium products in China, are more and more often found. Polish operating tables, hospital beds, delivery beds, patient transport trolleys or gynaecological chairs are appreciated by physicians in the Middle Kingdom.

According to a report published by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) in 2021, goods with a total value of more than USD 5.5 billion flowed from Poland to China, an increase of nearly 29% compared to the previous year[6]. The value of specialised equipment from Poland (including medical equipment) exceeded USD 160 million[7]. And even though the share of Polish exports in the Middle Kingdom is increasing every year, it is not easy to gain the trust of the Chinese – especially in the medical industry.

Polarised medical market

— China is a difficult market characterised by a very high entry barrier in the form of, for example, expensive and long-term certification of medical equipment by The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA, previously CFDA). The competition is immense, both in the form of major global players and many local companies. As a result, the market is polarised between premium medical equipment and locally manufactured operating tables or hospital beds. Chinese customers are very demanding – they are willing to pay a lot for the ordered medical equipment, but they expect the highest quality products and service in return. At the same time, one of the issues of the system remains the shortage of medical equipment service. The problem is that some Chinese manufacturers offer cheap medical equipment with a short and expensive operating period. They are there today, tomorrow they are gone, and if the hospital needs to use the service, it is left without support. Medical equipment ordered in thousands of units

When a medical equipment manufacturer in Poland receives an order for 200 hospital beds from a Polish hospital, it is already said to be a major project. In Egypt, tender proceedings for 200 pieces of medical equipment are more about operating tables than hospital beds. Cairo International Medical City

The hospital design calls for 138,258 sq m of floor space equipped with modern medical equipment. The 73,600 sq m main hospital building consists of a two-storey basement, a ground floor and four upper floors. The hospital will have space for 12 operating theatres, two hybrid operating theatres ande one room for robot-assisted surgeries. Of course, that is not all; in addition to this, there will be four laparoscopic surgery rooms, three catheterisation laboratories and dedicated post-anaesthetic care units (PACUs). This state-of-the-art space will also include an intensive care/therapy unit (ICU/ITU), as well as laboratories with 2 CT scanners, an angiograph and two MRI scanners. It will be able to accommodate 360 patients on hospital beds. On the third floor, there will be 11 delivery rooms equipped with delivery beds[2]. This massive project will consume many millions of dollars spent on building and furnishing the hospital with medical equipment. This will, of course, benefit the patients and doctors who will use the new hospital.

Capital Med

It is a medical investment of more than $1 billion over 500,000 square metres. It will be the largest private construction project dedicated to the medical industry in the entire Middle East and Africa[3]. Provided with state-of-the-art medical equipment, the hospital is designed to offer rooms with approximately 2,000 inpatient beds. In addition, the facility will also include a separate complex dedicated to rehabilitation and wellness. The project targets all socio-economic classes in Egypt, Africa and the MENA region in general. Egypt is one of the largest healthcare markets in the Middle East with a population of up to 100 million. Being built in the heart of the Middle East, Capital Med will be the only qualified integrated healthcare centre. The hospital will aim to meet the needs of patients in this huge market[4].

Medical City

The project will be part of the so-called NAC (New Administrative Capital) of the so-called New Cairo. Three hospitals equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment will span an area of more than 260 hectares. Each of the hospitals will be built on a plot of more than 20,000 square metres. The buildings are divided into three categories: a general hospital, a children’s hospital and a women’s hospital with a maternity hospital. Equipping the hospitals with medical equipment for such a large project will require the opening of a tender, which will include operating tables, hospital beds, delivery beds, gynaecological and treatment chairs, patient transport trolleys and many other pieces of equipment in large quantities. Each facility is expected to have a capacity of 300 hospital beds. A training centre for doctors will also be built on the premises of the Medical City [5].

Physicians, medicines, medical equipment – this is what the Russian health service lacks

Russians are affected by Western sanctions in almost every area of life. Above all, the lack of access to Western goods, which are difficult or even impossible to produce on the territory of the federation, is burdensome. This is also the case when it comes to access to the health service, which, since the beginning of the war, has faced not only staff shortages but also a lack of access to medicines and specialised equipment. Medical equipment imported from abroad, e.g.: from Poland, has regularly been supplied to Russian hospitals until lately. The situation changed when foreign companies withdrew from trade with Russia. Not only is medical equipment from the West no longer supplied to Russian hospitals, but it is also not serviced.

The situation is tragic

An independent Russian portal warns that the situation is very serious. Many physicians have left the country and others have been conscripted into the army. The lack of a unified medical aid system makes it difficult to manage the situation. There is a shortage of medicines in the country, both specialised medicines, which patients with chronic diseases cannot do without, and ordinary ibuprofen[1]. Medical equipment is also not available.

– Due to the above, it is not possible to rely on statistical data but rather on the information from Russian physicians and other medical staff as well as suppliers of medicines and medical equipment, who indicate that the situation is tragic,” the portal reported[2].

Outdated medical equipment for Russians

Russian health facilities also struggle with a lack of access to specialised medical equipment. Operating tables, hospital or delivery beds are no longer imported from abroad. The lack of equipment results in downtime in the health service and the lack of possibility to provide proper care to citizens. Limited access to modern technologies forces Russia to often use old medical equipment, the quality of which leaves much to be desired. The medical equipment purchased by Russian facilities before the war requires servicing and proper maintenance. Obviously, the lack of service and spare parts, which are only available from the medical equipment manufacturers, means the risk of breakdowns and downtime.

Polish medical equipment manufacturer in solidarity with Ukraine

Marek Suczyk, Vice President of Famed Żywiec, talks about how the Russian aggression against Ukraine has affected the supply of medical equipment to that country. Before the war, the Polish manufacturer of medical equipment regularly sold its medical equipment in the Russian Federation. However, the attack on Ukraine resulted in a withdrawal from trade relations with the aggressor.

— Due to the attack on Ukraine, we have decided to suspend trade relations with the customers in Russia. The decision entailed the cancellation of the confirmed orders as well as new requests, e.g. a project involving dozens of operating tables. The situation affected our partners directly. It made them realise clearly that the sanctions were actually taking place and were not just idle talk, as was expected. All partners parted ways with us with the hope of restoring business relations in the future.

Medical equipment manufactured in Poland is not available in Russia.

At this point, it is difficult to predict what the situation of the health service will look like in the near future. Certainly, restoring the health service to the pre-war condition and improving relations with Western producers will require a complete change in the conduct of Russian decision-makers.
